I hope they don’t use it as an excuse for even more sound cuts.

I don’t know why they don’t use the dips to educate people. When they have the tweety bird noises, they could say which tweety bird was singing.

My understanding is that the sound dips for music is due to copyright issues, i.e. they have to pay the copyright-holder(s) of a song the relevant fees for public broadcasting/performance.

This shouldn't apply to the housemates playing a piece of composition that is in the public domain, because the housemates/Endemol would own the artistic copyright for their performance(s).

It does say that the sound is dipped because the housemates are singing.

My mate had somebody from the Performing Rights Society came to check out my mate’s club. He had his meal and while he was eating looked through my mates music, he made a few notes and then buggared of without seeing anybody perform.

From what I saw none of the string players knew how to hold the bow correctly. Sylvia certainly wasn't.

Sorry but just wanted to point out what Sylvia was doing wrong here...

http://img2.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/c17adf8e4e.jpg

1. She is holding the cello all wrong. The position is wonky, and it's a bit too high as well.
2. Her left arm and hand positioning is wrong as well, needless to say.
3. She is holding the bow all wrong as well.
4. You can bow over the distal end of the fingerboard, but even so she is bowing too high. The normal bowing channels are between the fingerboard and the bridge. And it's not arbitrary, where you bow can make a huge difference to the kind of sound produced.

Is BB giving them lessons in their chosen instruments? How are they being taught?

There are supposed to be written instructions on how to play the instruments correctly.

You can't learn an instrument from reading instructions. Admittedly you can teach yourself up to a certain point, but music-making is a practical art, you need a teacher showing you what to do and giving you feedback guidance.

Gemo52

The instructions said that the most important thing was the tempo and not the tuning.

I don’t know how they expect people with no musical experience to play fretless instruments like the cello and the violin without an electronic tuner or tuning fork.

Exactly.

The instructions talk rubbish.

There’s a double bass as well.

I checked the instruments and there’s no electronic keyboard which they could get the tuning from. I suppose they could use the xylophone.

ALS sounds even better as a chamber piece. I once played it at uni with friends as an alternative piano quintet - piano, violin, clarinet, cello (me), double bass. Played adagio ma non troppo.

It was very moving http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/9039/cryvi0.gif

Speaking of which - i do think du Pre was excellent, btw. I really like her recording of the Dvorak concerto. She's not my favourite cellist, however.
