View Full Version : When blogs go too far
Fenella

There have been quite a few blogs around lately which talk about certain members of certain forums. Some of these are quite amusing, even if they're a bit insulting. I've been mentioned on some of them in a way that's not particularly flattering, but I do have a sense of humour and there's been nothing outrageous.
Sadly, some of the people who are writing on these blogs go way too far. They talk about someone's private life, they post personal details, and they say the most disgusting immoral things. How far is too far in your opinion? I think it's OK to poke fun at someone but it's not OK to make blatantly disgusting and untrue comments which could really upset someone .

There are millions of blogs out there and you get all sorts, including people who use them to settle personal scores. Often they are meaningless and of no interest to anyone except people with personal knowledge of what is being referred to.
The trouble is that it is very difficult to police the internet, for jurisdictional and other reasons, and the law is largely ineffective and way behind. I have no idea what blogs you are reading Fenella but my advice is to stop reading stuff if they are upsetting you. Ignorance is bliss :)

I haven’t seen any recent blogs so I can’t really comment.
The necessity to fling e-knives at other forum members has passed me by. I don’t know if that is because there is something lacking in me or my life.

It's not really my style to stop reading things which upset me Dongle, it's more my style to point out that they're wrong and immoral.
Most of these blogs are on Google Blogger, who take absolutely no responsibility for the content at all. They won't even remove libellous comments without a court order, and I think it's time that they were told they can't escape responsibility for what people use blogger for. Isn't it time there was some Government control over the internet? I can foresee a rise in libel cases because people are allowed to say what they want and nobody can stop them it seems.

Doesn't it bother you though that a friend is yours is posting really horrible stuff? Don't you have an opinion about that? If a friend of mine went too far I'd tell them, but maybe that's just me.

If I knew who the friend was I might be able to comment but I’ve been away for a week and haven’t caught up with what has been going on.
I’m well past the stage of expecting anybody to take any notice of what I think.

OK, I'll be more specific. I'm not sure if this post will be against the rules here so feel free to let me know if it is.
The first blog I'm referring to is one written by Dayus. It's very well written, and the subject matter is other forums and particular members of those forums. It was relatively harmless at first - insulting of course but that's to be expected. A couple of days ago he went too far and posted something very malicious, and, as far as I can see, totally unprovoked.
The second one is the infamous Bitchfest Blog. A lot was said about that at the time, so I won't go over that again. However, that blog has been dormant since February until recently when the author made two more entries on it. The first entry included someone's real name and details and accused them of being some sort of sexual pervert. The second entry consisted of a real photograph of someone with the words "kiddie fiddler" as the heading.
Then there was a blog by the "Phantom Blogger". This blog has since been pulled but it was aimed at various members of various forums. It was largely very entertaining and amusing, but some of it was a bit vicious and some sensitive people did take umbrage.
In all of these cases the blogs went too far. What motivates these people to do this? I can see why they start blogs - to entertain other people, but why do they go too far and stop being amusing and become vicious?

Because they get off on it Fen? They like to cause mayhem? Dunno. This is why the main forum I post on is private; so that people can't get hold of our personal information and use it in this way. There are some very unscrupulous people out there who wouldn't think twice.
If you put your information out in the public domain, expect that to be taken advantage of. Sad but true.

Well that will protect you to some extent. However, most private forums have moles who will pass on info they see in a private forum. Also, even if you post stuff in private it only needs one disgruntled member to post it elsewhere in revenge. It also won't stop people saying spiteful things about you using your user name, whether they actually know anything about you personally or not.

No I'm not, it's just what I have observed, and also because I think it makes sense. I think people are too trusting in private forums and that's a mistake.

I personally don't give personal information out, even in a private forum. On AGs for example, there are areas for posters who have known each other longer where we can see each other's picture. But you have to be pretty trustworthy to get in. I have given my email to Knickers and we MSN each other. She knows my real name. I think there is possibly two other users on that site who know my real (first) name, and none that have my email address. You're assuming that in private forums everyone knows everything about everyone else. That doesn't necessarily happen.
I think the problem most people have with private forums is that they are being excluded. Insecure people might see that as rejection perhaps.

I don't really know what goes on in them because I don't join them generally. I'm just saying that people should be wary of giving away info just because they think it will be secure. If people talk about personal experiences they should be aware that anyone could be leaking it elsewhere.

I don’t give out any personal information at all but my mate is totally open about everything and just publishes things without thinking about it. It never occurred to him that doing so could affect me.

Until the other night I cared what people said on forums or blogs. I even cared when it was about someone I didn't particularly like if it was very malicious. I thought there was a line which shouldn't be crossed, and I always said so.
Something changed though when I was blatantly hassled the other night and nobody said a word about it, or even worse, they joined in. That's what's changed. Whether it'll stay that way I don't know, I just know that I'm tired of people saying what they like about me and nobody saying a word, so if anyone else gets it in the neck now they can look after themselves. Later on some people did care enough to let me know in private how disgusting they thought it was, and I appreciate them doing that.
Actually, I hope that does change again because I don't really want to become hard-faced like so many people are on forums, but for the moment I really don't care what anyone says about those people who are hellbent on ganging up on others with their cronies and coming out with as many lies as they can think of. I don't know what I'll do next time I see anyone doing that - maybe I'll care, maybe I won't, I'll have to see.
OK?
