The Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal.

I wonder if really determined musicians will slip a bit of goth or emo music into the middle of an innocuous folk tune.

Whhaaaaat? That is DUMB, that is SO STUPID! How are they going to implement that? Jesus, musical genres aren't black and white. You can make music and say it is one genre when it is another, who is going to prove you wrong? The courts? The government? Way to waste everyone's time.
This from a country who can't even enforce copyright laws....

What sort of music is Goth and Emo anyway? I wouldn't know it if I fell over it.

You'd know it if you stepped in it. ;)

Goth and Emo are two distinctly different types of music that always get lumped together because of their "style" - as in fashion not sound.
Goth music has been around since the early eighties - think Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Emo has been around since the early nineties in the US but recently has taken off worldwide. An example of an Emo band would be My Chemical Romance.
They both favour dark clothes, make-up and androgyny, although Emo music is sometimes called "Goth-lite" as Goths are wear more outrageous clothing and make-up.
Emos can be identified by their low slung trousers, revealing their underkeks (ffs) and studded metallic belts (around their thighs usually), tight tops, spiky hair etc.
Goths prefer more luxurious fabrics, velvet, lace, rubber etc and usually have long black straight hair, long black leather (or velvet) coats, crosses or skulls for jewelry, frilly shirts and the like.
Goths hang around in graveyards and Emos can be seen in your local high street being very skinny and trying to stop their genitals falling out of their trousers.

From the Urban Dictionary:
Music:
Generally widely varying, but it tends to have some common ground. Most Emo Goth's tend to like dark, sad, romantic music. Some may also have a tendency towards metal and death metal, but not all do. Typical Genres may include: Gothic, Emo, Grunge, Post-Punk, Post-Grunge, Nu-Metal, Pop Punk, Death Metal, New Wave, Ambient, etc. Basically anything they like they will listen to.
and
The bands which seem to be most widely listened to by the culture seems to vary, mostly by age. Older Emo Goth's tend more towards The Cure, Interpol, Depeche Mode, Siouxie and the Banshees, Nirvana and Jimmy Eat World whereas younger Emo-Goth's may listen to those bands as well as more recent acts such as My Chemical Romance, Aiden, AFI, Taking Back Sunday and Deftones amongst other things. Generally the younger generation is open to a broader range of music.
In depth listing of bands that are oft times listened to by Emo Goths:(not necessarily always, and there are others besides these)

Suxi and the Bs? That was known as sort of new wave was it not? Or possibly a bit punkish?
I don't think I understand emos. Doesn't everyone look like that these days?

I think I must be an emo then cos I like a lot of those bands - except I haven't heard of most of them. They seem to have a wide variety of taste. The Rolling Stones are nothing like Faith No More, and The Who is nothing like Depeche Mode. :o
I suppose they think they invented all that music do they?

It’s just a list of bands they generally like listening to.
I wonder how the Russian government are going to define goth and emo music.
I found it interesting that a favourite artist of mine, who is described as depressing by people that don’t know his music, is not on that list. :D

Do you mean Leonard Cohen by any chance?
Here in the UK in the early 90s that acid house music was frowned on because it was thought that it went hand in hand with ecstacy tablets. I must admit, I'm quite fond of that hardcore dance music or whatever it's called, and I always feel like I should be taking an E and swaying in a haphazard manner and flinging my arms around when I play it.

They started off as punk but were embraced by the Goth genre because of their style. Their later work is more Gothic than punk.
The Mission are quite Gothic I guess.... ?

The Mission formed from ex-members of Sisters of Mercy, a band that got its name from a song by guess who?
