View Full Version : Olives
I absolutely love olives!
Usually black olives are my favorite.
However, yesterday, I had some green olives stuffed with some sort of cream cheese - and they were amazing.
I never used to like olives, but they're probably one of my favorite things to eat now.
Who else likes them? I know they're not *hugely* popular. You either love or hate them.

I hate black olives.
I first tried them on an airline meal when I was 6, I thought they were grapes :o
They are definitely an acquired taste that I have not acquired.
The airline olives were probably cheap horrible ones. You've got to pay decent money for them. You can defiantly tell the difference.

I can't bear olives, especially the green ones. The first time I tried to eat one was when I was about 10. I could not believe how disgusting it was, but being a polite child I couldn't just spit it out. I have bad memories of trying to chew the horrible thing and just wanting to puke!

I love olives, too. I like Kalamata olives, anchovy stuffed olives, crostini with olive tapenade and sun dried tomato… I like the pouches from crespo.

Unripe olives are green and fully ripe olives are black.

Not completely different because black grapes are green before they turn black, it’s just that they’re not used when they are green.

I didn't know that.
Is that the difference between red wine and white wine as well?

Red wine is from black grapes, white wine is from white/green grapes.

So red wine is sort of basically white wine in disguise?
I think I am getting confused. :o

No they use different grapes for red wine and white wine. Better know ones used for red wine are Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Shiraz. Better known grape varieties used for white wine are Muscat, Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay.

Ah, that's useful knowledge.
I know next to nothing about wine. I really buy them as a gift... I go by price rather than knowledge of what's a good/bad wine....hopefully without causing inadvertent offence with something crap... you can't go wrong with a £5 bottle can you? :)

No, not really.
I had a really nice English wine when I was away – Chapel Down Bacchus. :)
(Bacchus is a grape variety.)
I don’t know a great deal about wine but I drink it. Out of the wine I drink there’s only about 2% that I think is vile, I never select sweet wines or ultra-cheap ones though, about 80% I think is ordinary and the rest is really nice and they are usually ones bought at restaurants when I’m away.

I like lager and it’s now become more acceptable to have it with meals – not that I haven’t always done that.

I am a MASSIVE olive fan, our local farmers market has a whole stall of them, my faves are big green olives stuffed with feta cheese, and big green olives stuffed with sun roasted tomatoes. If you stick one of each flavour in your gob its heaven lol

When I’m away one of the first things I buy to stock up the fridge is olives. The go very nicely with the beer I buy at the same time. :)
