Anyone who has ever been tempted by the prospect of finding love in the lonely hearts columns should read on. In a terrible tale of deception, a conwoman who met her fiancé through such an advertisement fleeced him of £300,000 by pretending to be dying of bowel cancer.

Anne Marie McKeown, 40, preyed on Ewan Cameron for two years, telling him that she needed money to pay for medical bills while secretly spending it on an extravagant lifestyle with her secret lover.

She went to quite some lengths to convince him.

“went to the extent of having fake surgical scars tattooed on her body, borrowed a colostomy bag and recruited a friend to dress up as a nurse and push her around in a wheelchair. ”

This was the closing sentence, “Mark Moir, in mitigation, produced a psychiatric report that described McKeown as a “vulnerable” person with a range of problems.”

She doesn’t seem very “vulnerable” to me, just the people that meet her.

What you said. It's the people looking for love in lonely hearts columns - like Mr Cameron - who are vulnerable.

It's a shame that these kind of predators spoil lonely hearts columns for the genuine people.

I wouldn't recommend them as the best way to find true love.
